so much good!

We’ve been missing-in-action on the blog scene since last August (almost a year now). This year has been a whirlwind with so many *good* changes and we are so excited for the year ahead.

Here are some highlights…

This year we published our very first peper & parlor lookbook – it was so much fun! Be sure to keep your eye out for our next big project.

Late last summer we went on our first ever “team-building” retreat to Puerto Rico! We had such an amazing time at the Caribe Hilton, strolling down the streets of Old San Juan, and checking out the local scene at Piñones beach. Anne a.k.a. “big sexy” even got a free surf lesson, haaa! We also had a chance to meet some of Yomaira’s family in the mountains of Caguas, P.R. We can’t wait for the next trip.

We’ve also welcomed some really awesome new lines by independent designers. You’ll see dedicated blog posts to those in the future. One of the sneaky best-selling line is Upper Metal Class – handmade minimalist jewelry on the west coast by artist T. Screen shot 2014-06-22 at 1.35.43 PMWe also have a new staff member in the ranks! The peper and parlor newbie is Ashley. After a few post-grad years on the island of St. John she’s back on the continental U.S. and honing her retail and event planning skills. You’ll see her at the shop on weekends and some weekdays.Screen shot 2014-06-22 at 1.50.30 PM

Our e-commerce site peperandparlor.com is chock-full of the best pieces in the shop. Our former staffer-turned-photo editor at Conde Nast, Brenda continues to blow us away with her photography and endless creativity.

There is lots more happening and we can’t wait to tell you about it!

“Nothing Can Hurt Me”

is the title of the newly released documentary about cult favorite pop band Big Star.

Last night at the John Varvatos shop on Bowery was a great night celebrating it’s release. The party’s highlight was the energized rockin’ performance from Big Star Third whose players included Mike Mills (R.E.M.), Chris Stamey (DB’s), Richard Lloyd (Television), and Gene Holder (DB’s).

It was great to see first-hand a real rock show in what was formerly the site of legendary nightclub, CBGB’s.  John Varvatos took over the space in 2008 when he called the shop “a tribute to what CBGB meant to America and to the world…But we’re not building a mausoleum. We’re gonna have concerts. We’re gonna build a living, breathing rock ‘n’ roll store. Well he did a fantastic job. Yes, sadly gone are the seedy roots of punk and indie rock but unfortunately there is getting to be less and less space in our superficial world for that to survive.  I’d rather a John Varvatos shop with live shows (Which, by the way, is clearly one of his true passions.) than another Sephora.  Don’t get me wrong, but the time and place was then and there.  There will never be another Ramones, Big Star, Joan Jett, or Jonathan Richman. They were the originals. I am fortunate to have this music to play anytime as well as never-ending stories from my friends who were there and a part of it!

Thanks so much Rick Edwards NYC for the great photos!!

A perfect day with bestie, Gail!! NYC happy Earth day!

I spent the perfect day with my groovy gal, Gail, today in lower manhatten. She knows EVERYTHING. I have so little time to leave my mile square that going to NY with Gail is such a treat!!! That’s partially because SHE ROCKS (Duh) and partially because she knows SO much about great things to do and see!!! This was just a quick trip to acquire me a bathing suit and maybe have lunch. It ended up as follows:

Quick trip in on the Path train to Christopher st.

ms

Then we zig-zag’d over to Houston and Sullivan (on all the sneaky backstreets Gail knows like the back of her hand) to Melvin’s Juice Box. Absolutely DELICIOUS, organic, filling, massive juices are served here! I got a “Lightening Bold Immune Booster” which I would definitely order again. There’s a great vibe in here. The lunch menu focuses mainly on Jamaican favorites like jerk chicken, rice and peas, plantains, etc.

l

Next up we set off to cross town to find Malia Mills on Mulberry St. for me to score a new bathing suit. I realize I don’t have one! With all the fantasy-travel plans I daydream about making I figured I need one ready to pack! (My flooded bathing suits included a great simple black bikini I’d had for about 20 yrs from Malia!) I found the perfect one-piece with great cut outs and removable strap (for all that tanning I do..haaa!). The gracious saleswoman was more than happy to offer to have one sewn just for me in the perfect color called Sequoia. Perfect customer service!

Moving along to one of Gail’s favorite stops: The Calypso “outlet” store. Everything is 1/2 off an already marked down price. Sizes and selection are very limited but with frequent trips in you can score a great piece.

Found a great little gift for Yomi at Canvas on Lafayette street. Today is her birthday and it’s so fun to get her stuff! This store has beautiful home and gift pieces. The pottery is especially clean and appealing.

A little farther up Lafayette is Morini. Gail had been dying to try this super popular eatery so this was the perfect time! Lunch is such a sneaky time to go out and eat since you can get into so many more places with no reservation. I had the “rucola salad” and the “Stracci.” which were superb. The pastas are all homemade and fantastic.

As if the gourmet buzz wasn’t enough we then headed over to Loopy Mango on Grand St. Ok this was the most incredible shop I’d been in a long long time! Gail discovered it recently and raved. She insisted I check it out with her and consider taking the knitting workshop on a Tuesday. Well the environment was so welcoming. Even though Gail has been in there only a few times the sweetest staff-member, “Mackenzie”, greeted her with familiarity. He was happy to show us around this treasure trove of knitting supplies, antiques, terrariums, and just great things! I am absolutely going to do a workshop there and think it would be a fabulous thing to do here at Peper with the Loopy Mango staff! (Stay tuned for this….)

Mission accomplished! New bathing suit on the way, great lunch with Gail, and made a great connection for an instore workshop.

Dear Blueprint Cleanse,

I am writing to you to politely suggest you consider incorporating chocolate and/or wine into your 3 day program. While I do find the Kale (green) drink yummy and the spicy Lemonade quite kicky, I’m just going to be too sad without my fixes.

Your Friend,

Anne

PS. I also suggest to you that when advising people about starting your program that they do NOT do it the same day they are locked in a studio apartment with their 2 yr old attempting to potty-train the tyke.

Adriana’s world: Rockin’ it “Grandpa chic”

IMG_3549

Adriana (AKA: “Sid”) has been busting a grandpa fashion move at least weekly for the whole 5 months she’s been back working at Peper. This gorgeous dark-haired beauty has curves galore and knows how to dress them but at least once a week she unapologetically rocks a look she calls her “grandpa style”.

Pictured above: NSF boyfriend jeans, Clue layered-look cardigan, Clare Vivier bag, Tylho white blouse (in store only).

We caught up with her today to find out a little more about what inner voice she’s listening to when she buttons that shirt all the way up to her pretty little neck:

sid

Girls: “Adriana, who is your grandpa and why do you want to dress like him?”

Adriana: “I’m deeply influenced by Archie Bunker”

Girls: “But that doesn’t answer the question.”

Adriana: “It doesn’t matter because my real Grandpa was a farmer in Puerto Rico”

Girls: “What is one grandpa piece that is crucial for the Grandpa chic look?”

Adriana: “Uh! Relaxed boyfriend denim”

Girls: “Does your boyfriend, John, ever want to dress like a Grandma?”

Adriana: “He probably dresses like his Grandma (Baci) in plaids and flannels.”

Well, not sure that answers a lot but thanks anyway, Sid!!!
