The perfect present…

Why is it that we find the best presents after the holidays?

After spending a few days on the west coast, Anne returns to us at Peper with a renewed perspective. A fresh look, if you will, on not only what we currently have to offer at Peper but also what our future will be. Every so often this type of self-inventory is crucial, it allows us to grow and pushes us, willingly or not, to that next level of greatness. The timing of course couldn’t be better, as we are eagerly anticipating our Spring ’13 arrivals.

So while we are taking a look around to see what we can make better at Peper, Anne notices (really notices) a product we’ve been carrying from Fred Design. The mixed messages mug from Fred Design, is an ingenious little mug where you can write messages of your choosing with stickers that they provide. Image

This has the potential to be the perfect present! Instead of gifting this mug blank you could write out a girlfriend’s nickname, or the name of a pal’s favorite pet, or as Anne has decided to do write your true feelings about a certain person. I know it always seems that we find the perfect present after the holidays but this gem can be given any time of the year.

anne’s big sexy haircut!

Oh Anneall work and no play makes your hair a dullish tangled grove of madness!

Over the past year we’ve witnessed you fighting your golden-pink locks and have listened as you threatened to cut it all off (“once and for all! and by the way, good riddance!”).

Anne, today you took a step in a fresh (and sexy) direction and for that we shall dedicate this blog entry to YOU (and your shiny new tresses)!

[p.s. thanks Lori from Hair Cult! you’re the best!]

Thank you Hoboken!!

It’s been tough to write what with my brain flooded with flood information etc etc.

I do feel like I need to talk about my beautiful store and my beautiful staff and my beautiful clients and friends….

When I was 26 yrs old I opened Peper Apparel here in Hoboken. The reasons I opened the shop ended up being completely different than the reasons I’ve kept at it for 17 yrs.  I dreamed of being local while working.  I had aspirations of having a space where I could be “all business” or be creative.  I saw my fellow shop owner (and now good friend!), Diane sitting with her husband doing crosswords at the cafe in the morning instead of rushing onto the bus to NYC.  I did always like…ok LOVE…clothes. And shoes.  And people.

As I look back at it all now I can still see where the shop has served the purposes I set out for it to. I now realize that Peper has been the most enriching, inspiring, stressful, joyous, life-defining thing I ever could have embarked on at 26.  The people alone who walk in my door are enough to make me want to get up in the morning. The things my staff have taught me will stay with me always. The community connection I now have to my absolute favorite city is so special. I have wealth beyond my wildest dreams in terms of these things.

I have to say thank you to all the lovely ladies (and men) who’ve shared with me and my staff their stories, lives, and patronage.  This would just be my “job” if it weren’t for you!

It also must be said that I have had the most incredible sales team any store-lady could want.  My lovely ladies warm my heart with their generosity, patience, humor, loyalty, and never-ending love for my kids.

Today I’m celebrating all that has kept me going through this long 17 yrs and I particularly toast my gorgeous team: Adriana, Arthur, Brenda, Courtney, Craig, Kali, Mayra, Tamara, and Yomaira.  I love you!!!

I look forward to years to come here at Peper and Parlor!!

yomaira’s favorite 5!

Anne’s “Favorite Five Things” is all the rage here at Peper & Parlor…and the Peper girls want IN!!!!! While we aren’t all brave enough to do a photo shoot, we do love to share the pieces we currently love. We decided that ever so often one of us will guest blog and chat about our favorites! We are so lucky our big sexy boss lets us have the pick of the litter at the shop – which makes us ever more knowledgeable about the products we get to take home…

Here are my current “must haves” (that I do have and I LIVE in)!

Raquel Allegra’s gold (mustard-y really) side-shred rayon dress! this is one of my favorite pieces – I’ve worn it to a wedding, to a conference, and to teach at Rutgers. I get tons of compliments every time and I feel sooooo comfy in all of Raquel’s pieces. She is definitely one of the Peper girl’s favorite designers!

How did i ever NOT own this Clare Vivier bag? It is by far the MOST supple, lightweight leather I have ever touched. It fits my iPad, a binder (with my student’s exams), my moleskin planner (so analog, right?), and all the other things I haul around. Anne know’s -and laughs- about the fact that I am obsessed with the ‘Attaché‘ (blame it on the scholar in me), and this bag is truly the PERFECT briefcase! So chic and effortless…YUM!

a peace treaty…how do you make the most simple pieces so damn stunning? Even my 10 year old cousin said that this was the “coolest” necklace she had ever seen..haa! This is called the “Hu necklace” and it is black thread wrapped on a spool..it is handmade and is antiqued gold plated brass. i wear it all the time y’all…even with my hoodie and yoga pants!

Enter: the perfect boot – P. Monjo’s lace-up. When we saw this at D+A at the trade show I literally cuddled them. I have been wearing them since we imported them from Spain earlier in the season. They are one of the most exquisite pair of boots I’ve worn – the hand-stitched Spanish artistry is evident.  Yes, there are tons of knock-offs in similar styles…but “aint nothing like the real thing.” so comfy and again..I am LIVING in this boot!

So I will confess…I am a bit of a soap wh@re (can i even say that?). Well, I am always on the search for the perfect soap (I love Marfa, Malin+Goetz, and MOR) but when I stumbled across LUCIA last year I was in lathery-smell good-heaven! Even my hubby is a convert. So now the soaps are at Peper & Parlor, the full line will be available on our online shop too. We have the little guest size soaps in the shop too, in case you dont want to commit to the whole bar..but honestly..you won’t regret it!

Alright y’all, thanks for reading! Next time it’ll be another one of us Peper girl’s on our glittery soapboxes professing our love for all things fabulous! xo, yomaira

what’s in her bag? peper girls reveal! (take it with typos…learning photoshop!:) )

So our darling Adriana (yes! Adriana is back!) suggested a fab idea for our readers! Since we are always interested in each other’s  varied accouterments, we thought it would be cool to share what’s in our bags.

We all jumped at the chance to “spill the beans”…

Adriana’s Beracamy Paris satchel:

highlights: the bubble yum gum is a childhood throwback! plus, we love the preppy train satchel by beracamy, it has four compartments so its perfect to house all the “necessities” of the everyday chaos

Yomaira’s Clare Vivier crossbody:

highlights:  the Yarnz cashmere scarf (keeps this caribbean girl extra warm in the almost chilly weather), the marc jacobs shades are a staple at peper…by the way,  i love all things Clare Vivier?

Brenda’s sparkling Monserat De Lucca tote:

highlights: the linea pelle zip wallet (always in stock at peper), brenda’s gorgeous yarnz tapestry scarf, and the adorable cloth covered hairpins from montreal’s carolina villamarin (a peper exclusive)!

Anne’s 49 Square Miles carryall:

highlights: the flashlight & hoboken parking ticket …just kidding! we love Anne’s gorgeous earrings from a peace treaty and she swears by the single strap 49 square miles super supple leather bag (an easy pick for a mom on the go)!

Show me your legs!(Anne’s favorite five… Vol. 2)

I LOVE hosiery. I do. I make up reasons to wear stockings, legwarmers, fishnets, knee-highs, texture, color, layers layers layers.

We now have the exclusive for Hoboken from Hansel from Basel, Lisa B, Philippe Matignon, and Hortensia Handknits.

Wool, Cashmere, Alpaca, Cotton….GORGEOUS!!!! Come by to see (and feel) for yourselves! priced at $18-$185.

Anne’s Favorite Five (give or take!) vol 1.

Often in the shop the question directed to me is: “What are you loving right now?” Well having had the shop for 17 years, at this point I’ve become very selective with what comes home with me (especially since we live in a one room apt now!) However, there are ALWAYS about 3 (or 4, or 5, or 6…) things that I think are MUSTS!! This week I introduce our newest pieces of what I think is well-done, wearable, delicious, well-fitting etc etc etc!! I personally OWN all these pieces and LOVE LOVE LOVE them!!

The BEST pencil skirt I’ve had in awhile. Just a little more interesting than black. Constructed of the stretch jersey that Butter by Nadia is famous for. Super flattering, totally versatile!

Hi-low cotton/cashmere sweater with leather sleeve trim from Mason. SEXY! Michelle doing anything with leather will get my attention every time!! Perfect light weight: I’m wearing it already!

Mother denim delivering the most comfy fitted skinny in the shop. Here in “Grand Sophie” which is like a light bluish black. Totally sexy. I got these because until lately I really haven’t been a big wearer of black but these seem a little softer, more subtle…

Crown Jewel henley is DELICIOUS! I swore off henley tees many years ago (not sure why…) but this one jumped into my arms on my trip to Fred Segal in Los Angeles and we’ve since ordered and reordered 3 times here at the shop!! Cotton/modal/lycra. Shape holds so well I can wear it twice without it looking stretched.

Enter: our little gems from Mei Vintage. I must confess I don’t yet have this one but I’m sure I’ll buckle within a month and order one for myself! Made in California of vintage kimono fabric and leather with a detachable chain. Perfect little bag to wear day or night!!

Lastly, Fab Buckle booties from Argila. Did a big debate with myself and wasn’t sure i could rationalize another bootie but yes, THEY ARE DIFFERENT!!! I needed them. I’m wearing (ie:loving) them right now…

Bringing you the best of Los Angeles…

I recently took my first trip in a very long time to Los Angeles, California. Although I had some old friends to reunite with I also needed to get to those shops!!! I stayed in Venice Beach at Su Casa after a recommendation from a great client Marta who’d stayed a bit there while shuttling her son, Ezra Miller, back and forth for acting gigs. That in and of itself was a complete scene! Between the singing troubadours who start at 9am and are unrelenting until sundown,  and the excess of “medical marijuana” I witnessed others “treating” themselves with, I had a lot of laughs every day. I actually saw a man pulling a decorated boom-box on a luggage cart that had flags all over it and was blasting a reggae version of “the itsy bitsy spider”…

My room was actually a fantastic suite facing the ocean-how funny i felt trying to spread-out in the space the first day since i’m so used to my teeny apartment here in Hoboken!

The last time I was in Venice (2000?) you could tattoo and drink and gawk at the beach/freak show but you couldn’t really SHOP.  The gorgeous pacific has called to many more than just the boardwalk freaks. The community if filled with artists, designers, great shops, and delicious restaurants.  When I explored Abbott Kinney (a street within walking distance of the beach) I was able to find incredible things including an adorable cardigan from LaLaLand, perfume from Lulu Beauty of Seattle, delicious scented candles from Nell’s Compass, kitschy Swedish kitchenware from Lotta Kuhlhorn I  had the best lunch of my trip at Gjelina.

It didn’t end there. On another gorgeous 79 degree day I headed just a few miles up the coast to Santa Monica where Fred Segal has a location.  There I fell in love with tees from Crown Jewel and 88 Orange, Mei Vintage bags,  and more! Some of my favorite purchases are below:

I did also have a little incident at Fred Segal in Santa Monica with these lovers:

Yes, i did buy a pair of Pedro Garcia sandals at the end of Summer…they were that FAB!!! It was my Birthday prezzie afterall….!!

My other best meal was dinner at The Village Idiot on Melrose where one of my great friends, Michelle (“Meeshee”) helps hold down the fort. We had an amazing kale salad and all kinds of special num-nums and cocktails with her hubby, Jeremy. Definitely worth re-visiting and eating at again!

I’m planning another trip this Fall when I plan to shop more in Hollywood as well as shop a great trade fair so who knows what i will find next!

the latest on the simplified living experiment… (this is part 6)

We are finally into some kind of groove down here. Writing about it seems almost forced in that i already can’t imagine NOT living here. The kiddos are so happy down here. There are all the normal bumps (and bruises) of dealing with a 1 and a 6 yr old but nothing that i can imagine would be better/helped/more healthy in a big ole’ house. MY own “stuff” has however been severely rearranged. At one point if i didn’t put down a meal with all the colors and mostly organic and/or fresh i though myself less of a parent. If I turned on a movie for them for more than 45 minutes i thought i was frying their brains. If i got a babysitter I thought i was taking my time with such young ones for granted.

Things are changing-mostly with me. The kids eat a completely white meal from time to time. I buckled and put on cartoons this morning for Beatrice after a 6am wake up that i just wasn’t equipped to deal with.  I kept unfinished loads of laundry on the floor for 2 weeks until this past weekend.  My being relaxed about these things has had a clear affect on them and their level of comfort. I’m not saying my new thing is to “phone-in” my parenting but actually the opposite in that i was getting crazy, impatient, short, explosive etc from the lack of space as well as lack of another adult partnering in this mad-house! I think taking responsibility for that Mommy-Dearest behavior is the best way for me to parent. To end the madness: Cut  a few corners, skip a bedtime book or two, choose myself once in awhile.  Every day still ends with a huge amount of kissing an hugging and snuggling.

This is a matter of Survival. It has been over 85 degrees most of the summer and we have no air circulation (or A/C) down here and I’m still keeping up at least 4 days at the shop despite being a single parent.  This is why things had to shift! Clearly right?
